Excalibur

Excalibur is one of the older casinos and hotels on the Strip, situated between New York New York and Luxor.

I think it's outdated, cheesy and in need of some TLC. That said; it is worth a visit purely for the excellent arcade section in the basement called the Fun Dungeon. Bring your singles with you though because each games costs a few.

Check out some of the hotel here:

You can see three different shows at Excalibur: The Australian Bee Gees, Thunder from Down Under or Tournament of Kings (which is a dinner and show). They're flogging off tickets for two of the above for $75 on the website.

Here are some clips from each show so you get an idea of what they offer (although Thunder from Down Under is fairly obvious - no full nudity is in this clip either).

Dining. Shudder. I had the worst meal of my life at Dirty Dick's (yep classy establishment that one). I ordered a Salad and couldn't eat it. I covered my meal with a napkin in disgust and wrote on it "Here's your tip - don't charge people for food which is not edible". Usually we are pretty good tippers (20% and above) but after the desecration of a salad I couldn't bring myself to do it. Steer clear.

New York New York

New York New York is (surprisingly not) a New York themed casino and hotel prominently on the Strip between Excalibur and Monte Carlo.

Firstly, it's awesome. There's a huge roller coaster that goes around the outside and the inside! The specs are the coaster is 203 ft (62 m) high, has a maximum drop of 144 ft (44 m), and reaches speeds up to 67 mph (108 km/h). Tickets are $14 each but you can get $2 off by printing this coupon, you call also get a whole day pass and family pass for a discounted rate.

Check out the coaster in this video.

You can see the Cirque Show Zumanity at New York New York. It's marketed as 'The sensual side of Cirque' and is 18+. We saw it years ago and I'n not quite sure how it earned the 18+ rating. Here's a little snippet of it outside so probably PG friendly.

We got tickets for the show on the day at Tix 4 Tonite - you can get tickets for up to 50% for seats they have not sold. I'll post more on that later and where to find the ticket booths.

Also in New York is a foray of eateries - and a jolly good Irish Pub

Hotels I have stayed in - Planet Hollywood

My first ever experience in Vegas was in 2008 and we holidayed with Ben's family, all staying at Planet Hollywood.

OK you can find it on this map which gives you an idea of where it sits on the Strip.

Firstly, the location was awesome. Can't fault it - you're right in Miracle Mile which a is a great shopping area with loads of shops, places to eat and drink and is home to the best sandwich shop in the world - but more on that later.

The decor is tres cliché but for slipping the hotel clerk some extra cash - we got a pretty good view. Excuse the terrible photo - this was back in 2008! As you can see it is from the window.

There was a 24 hour Starbucks in Planet Hollywood casino which was very well received and we also enjoyed the ABC Stores for our sustenance and Earl of Sandwich (more on the later again!).

Another great place to eat was Planet Dailes - which was always fairly consistent.

Overall rating - 7/10. Great location, clean and comfortable - no fridge in room though and decor quite tired*

* I have not been in the hotel since the 2008 trip so it may have been refurbished since then,.
